In Memory

Ginger Mitchell (Wedin)

Ginger's daughter, Margie Wedin Suydam gave the folloing eulogy at Ginger's memorial service on November 11, 2023.

"Over the years, Ginger's life has touched so many!  She was born Virginia Ann Mitchell as the last of four children to Cleland and Margaret Mitchell in Seattle, WA.  She was supposed to be named Michelle, but when her dad saw her red hair, he declared she had to be named Ginger.  The family moved to Pasco, Washington where Ginger grew up, attending all of her years of school just down the street at Pasco Public Schools.  She had several life-long friends.  Consistent with her very active lifestyle, she played tennis, and was the associated student body secretary during her senior year.  One of her fond memories was participating in the Queens Court for the Tri-Cities Water Follies being chosen as 'Miss Congeniality'.

After high school she attended Washington State University, majoring in Education earning her degree in Speech and Hearing Therapy.  After direct instructions from her mom, she joined Kappa Delta, which was across the street from her brother's fraternity, Acacia.  Through this connection she met her future husband, Dave Wedin.

Ginger and Dave were married in 1966 and in 1968 they moved to Dallas, Texas where Dave enrolled in Dallas Theological Seminary.  These were tumultuous years, just following the assassination of President Kennedy and forced integration.  She loved her teaching experience during those years. The Wedins joined Prairie Creek Baptist Church and became deeply involved as part of that church family.  In 1973, she earned her "PhT" degree ("Putting hubby Through"), and she and Dave were appointed as missionaries with the Conservative Baptist Foreign Missionary Society (CBFMS, today WorldVenture) to Austria.  She was integrally connected to the mission "family" until her retirement in 2012.  During her years in Europe, she was deeply involved in friendship evangelism, church planting and even teaching German to American soldiers in Germany.  The team in Austria became a close knit family for her even to this day.

Upon moving to Wheaton, IL she taught 4 year olds in "Toddlers Campus", the pre-school at First Baptist Church Wheaton.  When the Mission moved to Littleton, CO, Ginger became the Medical Mission Coordinator serving the health needs of the entire internationally located mission family. These 12 years were the highlight of her missionary career.

On the home front, she and Dave raised her beloved 3 children, Margie, Heidi and Rob.  During all of their years at home, while she was learning German, assisting in church planting, teaching preschoolers, and serving in the medical department, her primary commitment, which God gave her, was to nurture, guide and serve these three "kids".  In addition to being a mom to her 3 children and their spouses, Jason, Mark and Rachel, God gave her 13 Grandchildren: Ellie, Ben, Karissa, Anna, Silas, Nathan, Levi, Jesse, Jonathan, Abby, Hannah, Maddie and Gracie.  They were the main reason, during these past years with health challenges, why she asked the Lord to give her health and strength to be the best Grandma she could be.

During her "middle-school" years, attending Camp Ghormley on White Pass in Central Washington State, she committed herself to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Not only did she experience salvation through the grace and resurrection of her Lord, but she also grew in grace, knowledge and experience learning to love the Word of God and trust the leadership of the Holy Spirit even to her last days on earth.  In the ICU, after expressing her fears, when consoled by family, scripture and prayer, her last words were:  "I want to stroll the green pastures with my shepherd.  I am ready!"

To God be the Glory!  Great things He has Done! Ginger's life and death were a testimony to the Truth of John 3:  Jesus Christ came into the world not to condemn the world, but that the World (and Ginger) through Him might be saved!"
